Our Background
On 1st July 1989 our Managing Director - Kevin Clarke, launched MSC Australia (Mediterranean Shipping Company (Aust) Pty Limited) from a small office in York Street, Sydney. He had a staff of two when the first MSC vessel, "MSC Alexandra" (pictured right) arrived in Sydney from Durban on 14th August. By the end of 1990 he had opened offices in Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Fremantle - setting the pace for MSC Australia's extraordinary growth.
New trade routes, bigger and newer vessels, and staff increased steadily, but MSC Australia continued to look for new opportunities, and in 1993 established a corporate travel agency, MSC Travel Pty Limited. This in turn led to the establishment in 1997 of MSC Cruises, which markets the passenger ship division of the MSC Group. On 1st June 1996 MSC Australia opened its first New Zealand office in Auckland, quickly followed by offices in Christchurch, Tauranga and Wellington.
To support its rapid expansion, MSC Australia invested heavily in its own infrastructure, achieving Quality Assurance certification in 1995, purchasing offices in Adelaide, Melbourne, Fremantle, and Sydney, and, in 2000 centralising all national functions within the Fremantle office. Enormous resources have also gone into creating and retaining a well skilled workforce supported by modern technology. By its 15th anniversary MSC Australia employed over 300 staff spread across 10 offices within Australia and New Zealand. This milestone coincided with the maiden voyage of the 5050 teu "MSC Fabienne" (the largest container ship to visit Australia), pictured right, arriving in Sydney on 25th April 2004 - clearly demonstrating how far we have come.
